Medical Definition

A respiratory distress syndrome in newborn infants, usually premature infants with insufficient pulmonary surfactants. the disease is characterized by the formation of a hyaline-like membrane lining the terminal respiratory airspaces (pulmonary alveoli) and subsequent collapse of the lung (pulmonary atelectasis).
